The Rooney Marlee Animal Welfare Trust, (RMAWT) – the social arm of the Bennet & Bernard Group – successfully concluded...
The Bennet & Bernard Foundation serves as the philanthropic branch of the Bennet and Bernard Group, committed to advocating for a diverse range of social causes. For over a decade, we have passionately supported animal welfare, offering both personal and organizational assistance to numerous welfare initiatives and organizations dedicated to this important cause.
The Bennet & Bernard Foundation stands as the philanthropic arm of the Bennet and Bernard Group, dedicated to championing a wide array of social causes. Embedded within the very fabric of our company is a steadfast commitment to giving back to society, a principle that permeates every facet of our endeavors, including our social initiatives.
At the helm of this noble pursuit is the esteemed director, Fabiola Mendes e Rodrigues, whose unwavering passion and hands-on approach ensure that our efforts resonate deeply within the communities we serve. Under her guidance, we have embarked on a diverse range of endeavors, extending a helping hand to orphanages, elderly care facilities, rehabilitation centers for substance abuse, animal welfare organizations, prison outreach programs, and marginalized women, among others.
Our dedication to the welfare of our furry companions has led to the establishment of the Rooney Marlee Animal Welfare Trust (RMAWT), a beacon of hope for street dogs and cats in need. Collaborating closely with esteemed NGOs such as the Goa Animal Welfare Trust (GAWT), Worldwide Veterinary Services India, and People for Animals Goa, RMAWT initiatives have aimed at curbing the stray animal population through spaying and neutering programs. By addressing the root causes of overpopulation, we strive to prevent the heartbreaking cycle of abandoned animals roaming our streets and markets, alleviating the strain on both the animals and our communities.
Rooney Marlee Animal Welfare Trust (RMAWT) is the street animal welfare vertical of the Bennet and Bernard Group, under which all sorts of social causes are driven. Giving back to the society is an ethos of the company over the years, and the commitment to be the benchmark in every endeavour, pans this vertical too. Our support has spanned almost every animal welfare NGO in Goa, in small and big ways.
The future of better street animal welfare lies in the reduction of stray pet population. Puppies or kittens have a dismal chance of survival on the streets, and if they do, are prone to several illnesses, and in some case just difficult lives. While communities have raised themselves to support stray pets, with growing numbers this is not scalable to sustain. With this in the background, RMAWT strives to increase efforts in pet sterilisation efforts, lending funding support and being a strong operations partner with organisations like PFA, GAWT, WVS in collectively working towards street pet reduction.
The organisation will also host a haven for nurturing, loving, and compassionate care for aged, unwell, abandoned, injured, and lonely animals, scheduled for the end of 2024.
In the first of many such, the founders of Rooney Marlee coordinated with Worldwide Veterinary Services in 2021, to fully fund a home-owned pet sterilisation camp, at their home village of Quelossim, Goa. In just two days, a remarkable 57 pets were neutered. Subsequently another camp was organised in 2023 for 3 days, neutering a total of 127 pets. The efforts show results in the reduced stray population in the village, and heartfelt appreciation from the community.
Rooney Marlee partnered with Goa Animal Welfare Trust in a unique program to drive sterilisations. In this, a full team and resources was established to extend support for sterilisation of street or feeder-cared for pets. A full supporting team, an animal welfare transfer vehicle, renovations and other resources at the GAWT centre were sponsored to receive the increased volume to support this cause. In just about 18 months, the partnership contributed to 2100+ sterilisations.
Another effort continues with People For Animals, Vasco, to sterilise street cats or extend support to feeders or families, who may not otherwise be able to pay for sterilisations. Utilising the existing capacity of such NGOs is a win-win for our objectives and the community at large. We have supported over 300 cat sterilisations since we began in May of 2023. RM reviews the potential already available and supports any gaps to make this a successful endeavour. For PFA Vasco, we sponsored part of the cattery.
Beginning with the first camp in April 2023 at Chinchinim, South Goa, Rooney Marlee has added support to the successful village camps organised by leading sterilisation advocates, WVS. RM is grateful and proud of the results of such collaborated efforts that resulted in over 2300 sterilisation of home owned pets. Other programs like support to the Kub project, that supported sterilisation of market cats in Margao, have also seen contributions from Rooney Marlee.
The founding family of Rooney Marlee personally care for 30 pets, most of which were abandoned or stray, across two family homes. Additionally, each of our restaurants and project sites is home to 3-4 pets, who live happily and are lovingly cared for by our staff.
Dusty is a Persian cat that was abandoned. These woolly breed cats are not able to fend themselves on streets. We’re glad to have coordinated with the feeder and give Dusty a forever home with Kuldeep & Urvi
Akshay and Gautami have opened their homes to two puppies abandoned & rescued by Rooney Marlee. They grow beautifully well, and are sterilised, living in the wide expanse of a Goan home. While none have actively had pets before, this is a decision they are glad to have made, enjoying the companionship of these two puppies, that have grown into beautiful dogs.
Part of being Bennet & Bernard is to be caring we want to give a big applause to all our site boys and restaurant boys who take care of as many as 6-8 dogs that have come and stayed with us.
The Rooney Marlee Trust has made significant strides in community welfare through its dedicated efforts in organizing numerous pet neutering camps, promoting responsible pet ownership and reducing stray animal populations. Beyond their commendable work with animals, the Trust has also actively engaged in various social causes, offering support and resources to improve the lives of those in need. Their unwavering commitment to both animal welfare and social betterment underscores their pivotal role in fostering a compassionate and caring community.

I’ve always believed, money is only more money after a point in time. It’s value after that is in what it can do for others. Serving in social welfare is a cherished responsibility that I am unwaveringly committed to. Sincerity and dedication are two of the most essential characteristics of a social enterprise. No matter how big or small the initiative, these two factors can decide the outcome of your participation.
Providing to social causes has always been at the heart of the Bennet and Bernard Group. Supporting various social causes over the years has resulted in it now gradually been etched into the walls of this company. And; as it is always with the flow of positive vibes, such is also the case here.
It is but obvious and apparent that the ways of giving would have rubbed off within the teams and a general thoughtful outlook flows down and is inculcated into the minds and the ways of the Group as a whole.
The Corporate Social Responsibility further extends by supporting the less privileged, street pet care, cleanliness drives, support for a school for underprivileged autistic or differently abled children, made blankets for the less privileged, provided sewing machines to women to make them financially independent, clothes donations, blood donation camps, sports day with special-abled children, kindness drives to name a few.
More than anything Bennet and Bernard’s belief stems from investing time and effort towards the causes engaged herein.
